What a finished cut actually looks like

Level height across the whole lawn, including the awkward strip beside the drive and the hump near the mailbox that most mowers scalp. Trimmed around every post, tree ring and downspout at the same height as the cut, so the yard doesn't read as a series of collars. Then the drive, the walk and the porch blown clean, because clippings left on concrete are what people actually notice on their way in.

In spring, on fescue, that means cutting more often and taking less off. Take a third of the blade at a time and the lawn bounces back by the next visit. Take half because it got away from us and it sits there yellow and stressed for a week, right when the crabgrass is hunting for an opening.

Bed work, and why the prep is the job

The bed is where a yard goes from mown to kept. Clearing what's in there is most of the labor. Old decorative rock that has sunk into the soil. Weed fabric that failed years ago and is now shredded through the root zone. Settled mulch turned into a dense mat that nothing drains through.

Once it's cleared, the bed gets leveled so it sits a little below the turf line with a cut trench between the two. That trench keeps the bermuda and the fescue from creeping in, and it's what makes the mulch line look sharp from the street. Then the mulch goes on deep enough to hold moisture through August, without piling it against the stems. Mulch stacked on a shrub trunk holds water there and rots it.
